The US lost. The 300 bn is not from US taxpayers now but it is payment for only a few months of quiet. Just like the payments to Hamas started small and were always Qatari money. Next time Iran decides to close the strait of hormuz, after the US forces have retreated, the payment will come from the US taxpayers, and the US will have lost all sanctions and leverage.
It took 1.5 months for the US to assemble the current forces before the initial strike around Iran starting Jan 15. But we see now from Trump's statements that in a couple of months, Iran can close the strait of hormuz and force the US to pay. When Iran closes the strait again, the US won't have enough time to assemble forces again before the effects are felt and it will come knowing that it turned down military options this time. So why not pay another 300 bn next year and the year after and 6 months after that? Since the frozen Iranian funds were already paid, it will come from US taxpayers these times.
Eventually, the US might start to look for a military solution. But then Iran will show it has ballistic missiles that can reach North America. And maybe by then nuclear warheads it can place on them with the "downblended" uranium it was allowed to keep and "upblended" back to weapona grade.
The US lost and even if it goes back to fighting in 60 days or 120 days, its strategic position is weaker.
