A 2-year-old boy is dead, his mother faces murder charges, and a quiet Illinois community is reeling after police found the child unresponsive inside a Frankfort home.

Police say officers found the child Tuesday at Corie Walsh's home. He later died at a hospital, and the local FOX affiliate reports he was strangled.

Walsh, 40, faces three counts of murder. One neighbor said the circumstances immediately brought the Lindsay Clancy case to mind: "You never think it's going to hit so close to home."

Our hearts break for Saylor Hayes.

A five-year-old little girl wandered away from her family's rental home in Hagley Estates near Pawleys Island on Sunday. Her body was found the next day in the Waccamaw River, after a massive search involving hundreds of volunteers and multiple agencies.

Police say her parents knew her safety tracker had been removed, yet still asked authorities to search for her using it. The parents are accused of steering searchers away from the very water where she was ultimately found.

Her parents were arrested in rural Carter County, Tennessee, and now face charges of unlawfully placing a child at risk and willfully abandoning a child.

The people meant to keep her safe failed her. Horrific.
