Climate action will make British people 'more secure', says UK envoy @rkyte365, after Kemi Badenoch claimed it would hit living standards

SUVs are setting new sales records each year — & so are their emissions
If SUVs were a country, they would be the world’s 5th largest emitter of CO2

Oooh, a classic of the 'just 1%' genre. Ex Aussie PM, & current GWPF board member, Tony Abbott: "nothing Australia does will make any difference to climate ... given we’re scarcely 1% per cent of global emissions..." /1

Robert Jenrick tells Politico: “The U.K. is only 1 percent of the world’s emissions. There’s no prizes for being the first country in the world to decarbonize. We should be working towards net zero 2050, but we shouldn’t be decarbonizing faster than our major competitors”
NEW: The UK is leaving the Energy Charter Treaty, govt confirms this morning
Treaty has stood since 1990s but ministers now judge its protections for fossil fuel investments could ‘penalise’ net zero and expose UK to lawsuits

Fantastic news - continued membership of the ECT represented a risk to both a timely climate transition and the taxpayer. CCC recommendation on this from 2023 below
We did it! — the UK decision to leave the Energy Charter Treaty is a victory for campaigners and politicians across the political spectrum, who have long called it out for being incompatible with our climate commitments

UK must act urgently to meet climate commitments, says watchdog @theCCCuk
- Committee urges UK to set ‘powerful example’ of tackling climate change after ‘mixed messages’

. @theCCCuk doing its politely devastating thing again, with report concluding, yes, the UK's reputation suffered from mixed messaging and, no, we are not on track to meet legal emissions targets, whatever the PM says to the contrary. https://t.co/MdU8YffvLb
In June, the Committee noted a significant delivery gap to the UK’s Nationally Determined Contribution of reducing emissions by 68% by 2030. The agreements made at COP28 require a sharper domestic response and time is now short for the gap to be bridged. 3/6
The UK maintained a strong presence at COP28, within the negotiations and through the sectoral initiatives started during the presidency at COP26. As a developed country and a champion of international climate ambition, the COP28 agreement brings implications for the UK. 2/6
Going forward, domestic delivery against the NDC remains the best way for the UK to demonstrate international climate leadership
Gov can also demonstrate best practice by analysing what the GST outcome means for domestic policy & ensuring future decisions are aligned
Our COP28 report is out today, covering what happened at COP and what it means for the UK
It translates key agreements (inc. tripling global renewabls & transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems) into UK actions and suggests next steps on climate leadership for 2024
We have published our assessment of the recent COP28 summit. We identify key actions for the UK in response to the COP28 outcome:. https://t.co/aUWcaQyZvf
We also assess UK progress at COP28. We find the UK continues to play an important role on negs & in supporting key pledges/intiatives
However, the PM's 2023 Net Zero speech & domestic decisions on fossil fuels have contributed to an international perception of slowing ambition
Thanks for your incredible work, Chris! The @theCCCuk, with your leadership and collegiality, has been a huge part of kick-starting a new powerful global partnership amongst climate councils. Congrats on a great run & all the best on this next step @ClimateInstit@thecarbontrust
Feel very lucky to have worked for Chris at various points in his tenure. He’s a generous and inspiring boss who has had a big impact on how we all think about accelerating climate action in the UK.
Some news *gulp*.
I’ve decided to move on from @theCCCuk after six amazing years and more than 100 publications.
I’ve worked on energy and climate policy for 13 years now. I joined the civil service 20 years ago.
I’d like to see a different side to the climate challenge.
More announcements from the UK Government as the end of the year approaches. This time it’s the next stage of support for key carbon capture projects (it really does look like CCS will happen in the UK for doubters).
@RuthHerb2021 summarises them here, with links in her thread.
UK government today unveils some new detail on plans to support greenhouse gas removal:

A good step forward for supporting CCS-based removal methods. Still some details to iron out... (1/6)
