Clocks sprang forward across 48 US states this morning — a policy most people assume was designed to help farmers.
Daylight Saving Time was not. It originated as a WWI energy conservation measure — Germany 1916, US 1918 — to reduce coal consumption. American farmers lobbied to repeal it within a year. It disrupted milking schedules, crop dew timing, and market hours. The sun, not the clock, runs farm life.
The policy has continued for 109 years. A January 2025 Gallup poll found 54% of Americans now want to end the biannual change entirely.
When asked which time to keep permanently, 48% favor standard time, 24% favor DST.
Research links the spring transition specifically to short-term spikes — increases in cardiac events in some studies, an 8% rise in ischemic strokes in the first two days, and measurable upticks in traffic incidents. Under either permanent option, those risks disappear entirely.
19 states have passed legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, contingent on federal approval via the Sunshine Protection Act — reintroduced in January 2025, still stalled in committee.
For British Columbia, this morning was the last one. The province adopted permanent Daylight Saving Time effective March 8, 2026 — year-round evening light, no further transitions.
The case against the clock change is settled. The debate now is which time to keep.
@ArtsEverywhere@unccollege@moreheadplanet Please click below to tell state legislators NO on NC H326, a bill that would forever make the Morehead Planetarium sundial appear to tell the wrong time! https://t.co/HIhpkSIktf
@sportsrapport No it artificially changes the light and throws off the body systems. Standard time matches the sundial which is how our bodies run naturally!!
WRONG. There is no "extra hour" of daylight. Sunrise and sunset just get moved back an hour. The sun should be in the middle of the sky at noon. #SaveStandardTime
Notice how DST only shifts where the daylight is. DST does not add any daylight to the day. A time change does not add anything to society. #AbolishDST#SaveStandardTime
@kenmcosgrove Obviously we can’t have intervals of 3 minutes every 30 miles. Almost everyone travels for work now. Time Zones and Standard Time keeps the approximate zenith of the Sun in the sky at 12PM.
Did you know politicians further screwed this up by gerrymandering the time zones?
I want Government and politicians out of my life as much as possible.
We never had to legislate Standard Time. It was accepted that solar noon is at 12PM.
But Daylight Saving Time, including permanent DST, has to be legislated.
It needs to stop.
Save Standard Time.
It’s time to switch to Daylight Saving Time & many of us are dreading it. I introduced Senate Bill 1197 to make standard time permanent. It’s better for our health & aligns with our body’s natural clock, something medical groups overwhelmingly support. 1/3 @SaveStandard
We need permanent Standard Time. It's better for our health. Permanent DST was tried in the 70s and repealed 10 most later because it was a disaster. #SaveStandardTime#DitchDST
As usual this time of year the days have gotten longer. I’m enjoying these 11 hours of daylight (and still growing) Thanks to mother nature! Not the government changing your clocks.
#SaveStandardTime No more Daylight Saving Time. It’s not needed.
