@Dr_Keefer asks @JustinTrudeau environment minister @s_guilbeault if he has reconsidered his opposition to #nuclearenergy in light of the IPCC scientific consensus and the success of Ontario’s CANDU-powered made in Canada's energy transition away from coal. #savepickering
A bipartisan pair of senators, and a bipartisan pair of representatives, have introduced the "Build Nuclear with Local Materials Act", which would allow use of commercial grade concrete and steel for non-safety-related structures. Article link in reply.
That would significantly reduce nuclear plant construction costs, as nuclear-grade components are much more expensive than the commercial-grade equivalent.
Nuclear-grade materials would still be required for safety-related components. The NRC would retain the authority to determine whether a component or structure is safety-related.
One would have thought that the NRC already allows the use of commercial grade for components they deem to be non-safety-related. Is the issue that NRC was not trying hard enough to determine which components were not safety-related? That they took the easy approach of just classifying every thing as important-to-safety? (I've worked for companies that took the simplistic approach of just classifying everything as nuclear grade in their licsence applications.)
One thing I would add. I hope the NRC will give small reactors proper credit for their much smaller potential hazards. For such reactors, far fewer components should be classified as important-to-safety. That would allow more use of much less expensive commerical-grade components.
Another day, another application for an NRC license to run a nuclear plant for 80 years. This time, for the Cooper Nuclear Station in Nebraska. The license will allow the plant to run until 2054. Article link in reply.
Federal @NDP Leader @avilewis has changed his mind on nuclear energy.
He has taken the courageous stance of moving from a prior nuclear phaseout position to not wanting to shut down existing nuclear plants and in so doing decimate tens of thousands of high paying union jobs and drive up emissions.
Baby steps are better than no steps but that’s not enough Avi.
Steelworkers, Unifor, building trades, power workers are not going to settle for luke warmism.
I've been obsessed with the vast and untapped potential of civilian nuclear power at sea forever. I'm now the Chief Nuclear Officer at an exciting new company bringing nuclear power to maritime applications. There's much to do, so I'm looking for passionate and highly-skilled people who want to embark on this journey with me. Hit me up if you or someone you know may be interested. We need a Nuclear Licensing expert first, but will have many more openings in the pipeline.

some thoughts on the energy contracts awarded by Ontario's electricity system operator yesterday - its first procurement of grid-scale solar, and wind, generators in over a decade.
the avg rate of $88/MWh appears as a much different context for solar than wind

Another Russian terrorist attack on peaceful Ukrainian civilians proves Russia is a terrorist state! Sanction Russia out of existence!
Give Ukraine 🇺🇦 everything they need to close the skies, protect its citizens and defeat the Russian invaders!!
There is a structural reason that explains the unique vulnerability of LNG and paradoxically its historic attractiveness to importing countries. A 🧵...
The complexity of conventional oil sits at the importer’s end in multi-billion dollar refineries which take years to build.
LNG is almost the opposite: its complexity sits at the exporter’s end, locked inside exquisitely engineered liquefaction infrastructure.
On the importer’s side warming the chilled liquid back to its gaseous state requires little more than running seawater over a heat exchanger.
Today, India takes a defining step in its civil nuclear journey, advancing the second stage of its nuclear programme.
The indigenously designed and built Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam has attained criticality.
This advanced reactor, capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, reflects the depth of our scientific capability and the strength of our engineering enterprise. It is a decisive step towards harnessing our vast thorium reserves in the third stage of the programme.
A proud moment for India. Congratulations to our scientists and engineers.
NEWS: Massive budget cuts for US science proposed again by Trump administration
"It's an extinction-level event for science".
The US government is proposing massive cuts to almost every branch of science, from NASA to the National Institutes of Health. NSF would completely eliminate the social, economic and behavioral sciences directorate.
This would decimate the world's leading scientific system.

@PattyDurandGA Exactly. Genna was built before obstructionists such as yourself gained the public ear and forced regulators to keep on ratcheting requirements.

We don't agree on all things, but we certainly seem to by sympatico on the pathetic state of the OEB - Ontario's unproductivity generator.
one heckuva article - not the standard ev hate: "Honda was shockingly blunt about its situation, saying that it was simply unable to deliver products that offer a better value than that of newer Chinese manufacturers."
