d) Review the government’s inadequate environmental policies and environmental governance regimes, and reformulate them to protect, preserve and conserve ecosystem services and biodiversity across the country befitting the current context of national and global climate emergency.
c) Take immediate measures to facilitate the availability of funding from the Green Tax Fund to enable the above activities and ensure this fund is meaningfully used to protect, preserve and conserve natural ecosystems and biodiversity for present and future generations.
b) Take urgent and substantive measures to address the issue of mangrove mass die-off events occurring across the north of the country, where assessments are yet to be done to establish the presence of B.hainesii and, develop and implement management plans for conservation ...
We therefore call on the Ministry of Environment @MoEnvmv, Ministry of Finance @MoFmv, The President’s Office @presidencymv and other relevant State authorities, including the newly appointed Board of the @EPAMaldives, and the People’s Majlis @mvpeoplesmajlis to :
a) Take urgent measures to implement the recommendations of the MAP Report to
#SaveKulhudhuffushiKulhi
stop repeated loss & damage to the local community -
also to protect it as a site of special environmental significance due to the presence of critically endangered B.hainesii
We are also extremely concerned about the unacceptably slow and weak response by the authorities to the unprecedented and rapid mangrove die-off happening across the country. Available information shows that the die-off began as far back as December 2019 ...
#MangrovesMatter
Save Maldives Campaign is extremely concerned about the Ministry of Environment’s negligence of mangrove conservation, and the superficial nature of its advocacy to promote the Ministry’s work without substantive & real investment to establish facts or progress.
#MangrovesMatter
We also note that the discovery of the presence of B. hainesii is not new to the local residents of many of the islands where the species has been identified as distinct, being commonly known as Bodukandoo or Maakandoo locally.
#MangrovesMatter
Indigenous/local knowledge matters.
Save Maldives Campaign would like to inform the public that B. hainesii was discovered in Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuffushi in August 2019 by our advocate and volunteer, Adam Abdulla @edzyadam and team.
@fourmea#MangrovesMatter
This huge Mangrove apple tree was found in Dhefashi Kandoofaa in Sh.Feydhoo, right next to the area where die off has occurred. This tree is healthy so far! ❤️
Oh dear. The tree is present in several islands like Kendhikulhudhoo, Vaikaradhoo & ike I said b4 the confirmation was also recorded in 2019. In some islands it is referred to as Maakandoo or Bodukandoo.
It is just @MoEnvmv coming across it the first time. Not locals. Sigh.
PR is not gonna save or make a difference for the dying mangroves.
What has @MoEnvmv@EPAMaldives done about mass mangrove die-offs?
Stop the PR and start the real work.
B. hainessi has been observed and recorded in #KulhudhuffushiKulhi way earlier with the help of @jcu@TropWATER
Voucher specimens was lodged at Australian Tropical Herbarium in 2019.
Same species also observed in numerous Northern Mangroves.

The needlessly patronizing attitude shown by committee members as they claimed our members were uninformed, overly emotional, and unable to conduct “intellectual” conversation. We're unaware that “intellectual conversation” is limited to neoliberal capitalist ideologies. 10/10
Committee implied that concerns raised till now, weren't “academic” enough. We are sorry that right-wing politicians are trapped in their right-wing academic bubble. Responding further to the “value creation” of businesses, we believe that no. of jobs = no. of exploitation 8/10
