As a #FirstGen & Underrepresented scholar, the face-to-face communication with prospective committee members was invaluable! Without it I wouldn't have been able to get a feel for who would have really been able to support me through that process.
Not sure who is giving this guidance, but PhD students: we don't need to meet to discuss whether or not I should be on your thesis committee. Just send a description of what you do and why I might be helpful. I can decide based on that.
