@BoulerKatie Agreed. Not only did they not have modern medicine of the time, but they also had to work outside and deal with mosquitoes more which was a huge problem back then.
@MinneishaP The fact that they had to travel and have notes giving them permission really struck me. It shows how much law enforcement helped the owners by keeping track of the slaves for them. Escape was almost hopeless because everyone was helping to keep them down.
People of color in Mobile, whether free or not, needed to carry notes with them if they walked around alone. Free people usually had theirs made out of leather so it'd last longer. Imagine being "free" but still having to have a hall pass for the rest of your life... #AFRusa20
Roper selling a 30 year old and two 17 year olds. Likelyhood is he lied about their ages to get the best price possible showing "economics command techniques." #AFRusa20
It's awesome to see the Irwins taking a photo with the Gaithers shortly after the war. It shows just how close the families were. It relates to the quote "values command politics" to explain why they were so willing to help the Union soldiers. #AFRusa20
@TracySm20178965 I can't stop thinking about that quote either. How can you believe in God and not believe that God loves and cares for everyone? It's mind boggling.
Jimmy Webb had such an impressive amount of self control when he talked to deputy Crocker. I don't know many people that would continue asking to pray with someone who was insulting them like that. #AFRusa20
I wonder how they managed to get Sheriff Clark to speak about his experience fighting to keep black people out of the voting booths. (Ep 6 of Eyes on the Prize) You'd think he'd be too embarrassed to talk about those times! #AFRusa20
@kemjacks I don't think there's any safe way to get someone used to the violence they were about to face, but they did the best they could and I'm sure it helped prepare some people mentally.
@kemjacks They show her as a leader of the MFDP, fighting for the right for everyone to be able to work as a politician so long as they agree with said political party.
@kemjacks Her speech incited hundreds of people to get involved and encourage the MFDP which scared Johnson and Humphrey because they were afraid of progressing quickly.
The fact that Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer's speech was cut off by the president after just a few sentences, and she still got people all across America calling to urge support for the cause shows just how effective and to the point her speech was!! You go girl! #AFRusa20
