True love isn’t proven in calm skies; it shows its strength when storms rage. Because love that endures hardship isn’t fragile... it’s the kind that anchors you when everything else is shaking.
When I was 7 years old, I saved money for months to take my mother out for her birthday.
I had $40.
My mom was a single mother, and I was her only daughter. We didn’t have much. She worked several jobs to keep us going, but we had one little tradition: celebrating special occasions at Red Lobster.
For her birthday, I wanted to do something special. I wanted us both to order lobster dinners.
But when the waiter told me the price, my little heart sank. My $40 wasn’t enough for two meals.
I was embarrassed. I was disappointed. And I was trying so hard not to cry.
My mom noticed and quickly tried to make me feel better.
“Let’s just share one dinner,” she said. “I’m not that hungry anyway.”
I knew she was trying to protect my feelings, but I was still heartbroken. I had worked so hard to save that money, and I was even worried I might not have enough to pay for the one meal.
Then I did something else.
I secretly slipped the waiter a note asking him to put a candle in a biscuit because I couldn’t afford to buy dessert.
A few minutes later, the waiter returned.
Except this time, he brought TWO full lobster dinners.
Not only that, but the manager came over and told us we could order whatever desserts we wanted.
I was confused. I leaned toward him and whispered that I didn’t have enough money to pay for everything.
He looked at me and said:
“You’re mistaken!”
Then he explained that, just for that evening, mothers and daughters celebrating a birthday could get two lobster dinners and dessert for $40, including tax.
He winked at me and walked away.
I was only seven, but I understood that something extraordinary had just happened.
Someone had noticed a little girl trying her hardest to make her mother feel special, and instead of letting her leave disappointed, he gave her a memory she would carry for the rest of her life.
My mother and I have told that story on every birthday she’s celebrated since.
That manager probably never realized what he did for us that night.
He didn’t just give us two dinners. He gave a little girl the joy of feeling like she’d pulled off the perfect birthday surprise for her mom.
