🚨 New @PIIE paper today!
South Korea is projected to hit *negative* sustained GDP growth around 2050.
A key reason: aging. Fertility just fell below 0.7 lifetime children (replacement = 2.1)
One clear, feasible policy decision can avert this. I have receipts.

Nature-based solutions are a priority area for action in the Indopacific – home to 17 of the world’s 36 biodiversity hotspots. While it remains underfunded, it is a vital area of investment to build climate resilience. #SUFIP2024@ADB_HQ, @WWF, @KfW_FZ_int, and @IUCN
I also conveyed our deepest condolences to those affected by the landslides in Enga province. ADB stands ready to support the country address the immediate and long-term impacts of natural hazards & climate change by increasing & diversifying funding sources.
Honored to meet with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape on my first visit to the country to reaffirm @ADB_HQ support to government’s priorities in its Medium Term Development Plan covering public sector reforms, energy, infrastructure and climate resilience. 1/
.@ADB_HQ Vice-President @ScottMorrisADB arrived in Papua New Guinea today to discuss ADB’s assistance program with various stakeholders, including high-level government officials and civil society, and visit project sites.

Very happy to see this out and privileged to have authored a chapter on @WorldBank. I wrote this before joining @ADB_HQ, and I’m happy to report that my views have not been radically altered since shifting from MDB outsider to insider.
The Handbook on Aid and Development (https://t.co/gjQBfQMyuc), co-edited by Raj Desai, Jennifer Tobin and me, is out. Ungated overview chapter: https://t.co/bZQv0O1UnM
Important step forward in addressing flooding risks in Samoa. Past floods have cost the country 1/4 of its GDP, with the risk of bigger/more frequent impacts in the future. This project promises to greatly mitigate those risks in the country's economic and population center.
#ADBNews: ADB will support the construction of a dam to help address Samoa’s climate adaptation challenges of flood risk management, water supply, and renewable energy security.

Just for having been a handmaiden in that extraordinary, unprecedented outcome (of economic convergence of the poor towards the rich), hyperglobalization deserves—if not three—at least two cheers

We welcome @CIF_Action's $500 million to support the Philippines' shift to clean energy.
This will help to incentivize the early retirement and repurposing of coal plants through ADB's ETM and deploy clean energy in a way that leaves no one behind: https://t.co/VpDcyOLuYb
My message at the IPEF Clean Energy Investors Forum: we won’t accelerate and scale climate tech without better policy environments. Subsidizing private investors can’t be the only strategy. That’s why @ADB_HQ invests so much in policy-based lending.
We also discussed the renewed vision and ambition for an ASEAN regional power grid. @ADB_HQ is committed to supporting a regional approach to expanded energy access, relying on powerful cross-border incentives to drive investment in renewables to meet energy needs.
Fortunate to meet Cambodia's Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak on the sidelines of #ACEF2024. Cambodia has made remarkable progress on energy access and is committed to a renewables-driven energy mix as demand for power grows in line with strong economic growth. 1/
Heat is a predatory force, says investigative journalist Jeff Goodell.
The award-winning author of “The Heat Will Kill You First” says it preys on the most vulnerable first, but we are all ultimately vulnerable if we continue to burn fossil fuels. #HeatActionDay#BeatTheHeat

Why is the interest in behavioural science increasing, and how can it help us address the ongoing climate crisis?
We asked Harvard Law Professor Cass Sunstein.
Terima kasih banyak, Jakarta, Indonesia! Thanks to our government counterparts and @adbindonesia for a productive week. I saw good progress in promoting a circular economy, expanding geothermal power, and development of Indonesia’s new carbon-neutral capital city Nusantara.
