Beauty is all around us, whether we’re aware of it or not. I know very little. However, what I do know I share open and honestly.

I’ve learned a lot traveling these roads with you. More than anything, I’ve learned to remain teachable. The more I learn, the more fascinated I become. Every answer seems to open the door to ten more questions, and that’s part of the adventure.

One question that caught my attention when I was seven years old, was this:

Is color a mathematical equation? In many ways, yes. While we experience color as something emotional and beautiful, science describes it with mathematics. Color can be measured, calculated, converted, and reproduced using numerical systems.

The language of mathematics allows us to describe something our eyes naturally perceive. Here are a few of the mathematical frameworks that make color possible:

1. RGB (Red, Green, Blue)

This is the additive color model used by digital screens.

Every color is created by combining different intensities of red, green, and blue, each ranging from 0 to 255.

R(255) + G(255) + B(255) = White
R(0) + G(0) + B(0) = Black

Millions of colors can be produced simply by changing those three values.

2. HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness)

If RGB describes how color is built, HSL describes how we experience it.

Hue is measured as an angle on a 360° color wheel.
Red = 0°
Green = 120°
Blue = 240°
Saturation measures color intensity from 0% (gray) to 100% (fully saturated).
Lightness ranges from 0% (black) to 100% (white).

It’s a wonderfully intuitive way to think about color.

3. CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black)

Printing uses a different system.

Instead of adding light like a computer screen, printers subtract light from white paper using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks. It’s essentially the inverse approach to RGB.

4. CIE L*a*b*

This is one of the most scientifically accurate color models because it was designed to mimic human vision.

It describes color using three values:

L* = Lightness
a* = Green ↔ Red
b* = Blue ↔ Yellow

Scientists also use this system to calculate ΔE (Delta E), a mathematical measurement of how different two colors appear. A small ΔE means most people can’t tell the colors apart. A larger ΔE means the difference becomes obvious.

My mind is constantly spinning, even while I sleep. I’m always thinking about ideas and trying to find new ways to communicate them that are both educational and enjoyable. I don’t expect everyone to know these things. I simply enjoy laying down interesting facts that help us see the world a little differently.

The more I travel, the more I realize that beauty isn’t just something we see, it’s something we can understand. Behind every sunset, desert landscape, ocean wave, and flower petal is a little mathematics quietly working in the background.

The amazing part is that mathematics can explain how color works, but it can never fully explain why a sunset can stop us in our tracks or why a favorite color can make us feel at home.
