Physics, philosophy, complexity. @JohnsHopkins & @SFIscience. Host, #MindscapePodcast. Married to @JenLucPiquant. Increasingly at Bluesky rather than here.
Most of my social-media activity is elsewhere, but I've been hanging around X to advertise the podcast and occasionally make a political point. But it's become too unpleasant, I have better ways to spend my time. And ultimately I do agree with this sentiment.
“For every single professional use that scientists used to use Twitter for, Twitter is much worse now than it used to be, and Bluesky is better that Twitter currently is.”
(Link in reply because, as we know, X is terrible.)
@Marcia4Science@angie_rasmussen Dr. McNutt, partisan politics is certainly not the issue here, defending science is. Science is already bipartisan. If it is under attack by the government, the NASEM needs to defend it, no matter which party is in power.
Next Thursday 5/29, 7:00pm at Johns Hopkins: Alison Gopnik @AlisonGopnik gives the Distinguished Lecture in Natural Philosophy on "The Evolution of Human Intelligences: Exploit, Explore, Empower." Open to all!

American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, @JeffreyGoldberg. https://t.co/jvBzeJwEuy
It is important to be very clear. The people you see in this photo have not had any due process whatsoever between being uprooted from their lives & families in the U.S. and finding themselves now in CECOT prison in El Salvador: https://t.co/vnjugE9dW8

The trump administration has banned the use of hundreds of words. These include "woman," "sex," "LGBT," and "antiracism" - NYT
The list of 200 undesirable words was published by the New York Times. They included: "woman," "man," "antiracism," "discrimination," "feminism," "gender," "gender-based violence," "inclusivity," "LGBT," "nonbinary," "trauma," "victim."
But also Black, Native American.
Nowadays, these words should be avoided in official structures and on government websites.
Scientists are now organizing events, called Stand Up for Science, on 7 March in Washington, D.C., and state capitals. https://t.co/fhMS1HI3YW @NewsfromScience
