Head of School @AstroPhysSoton. Supermassive black holes. Interferometry. Simulations & models. European. Running. Opinions mine, not my employer's, etc.
Belated post: Direct measurement of the mass of a supermassive black hole at 'cosmic noon' in the early universe. Another first of GRAVITY+ at ESO's VLTI, and fantastic prospects once the new AO and lasers are added. #MPE#ESO#VLT#SMBH#Quasar

The last boxes for the GRAVITY+ adaptive optics have left Europe, and the first ones have been unpacked in front of Paranal's new integration hall. Stay tuned for a summer of integration and verification!
Paper Day: remember that outrageously long-duration, extremely luminous black hole accretion event AT2021lwx? We went searching for similar things in @ztfsurvey. This paper presents what we found!

IT'S HAPPENING:
Strongest EVER constraints on the free-streaming length of dark matter from a combination of the first 9 lenses in our @NASAWebb program and 5 previously measured lenses. This work was led by @ucmerced postdoc @RyanEKeeley https://t.co/GcUuGYeMU2
7 marathons, 7 days. Finished off in wild style by asking my legs to speed up at mile 20, and they responded with more than I could imagine. I've learned so much about myself this last week, but mostly I've learned how kind other people are. Thank you. https://t.co/wM3ad6ONPr
Great to see our astrophysicist @astro_pwise in the news today for his amazing 7 marathons in 7 days challenge!
He's raising money for @mssocietyuk in honour of his mum who has the condition.

Hugely humbled by this. But watch out ECRs: PhD and postdoc opportunities in AGN time domain observations with @ESO 4MOST, @GravityPlus_VLT interferometry, modelling, and radiation-hydrodynamic simulations coming soon!
Congratulations to Professor @SebHoenig.
Our Head of the School of Physics and Astronomy received more than £2million from @ERC_Research to embark on a new voyage that will measure the mass of #BlackHoles.

Announcing the first paper from our JWST lensed quasar dark matter survey. TLDR: We are optimistic we will be able to to use the full survey to confirm the existence of completely dark, dark matter halos if they exist. https://t.co/WUDRArwkIi
An exciting project led by Phil involving all corners of the astro group at @AstroPhysSoton. In one sentence: "Things can go mightily bang around a supermassive black hole" 💥🕳️
From my school years through PhD and beyond, my late grandparents constantly asked "have you found any new black holes yet?". I think they'd be quite proud of me leading this one!
.@STScI Director Levenson has announced that zero JWST Cycle 2 proposals were awarded time; observatory will instead spend the next year performing cool backflips and rolls. 😎
@npr247@janerrigby Is this surprising? If you look into the complexity of PAH excitation/survival and effects of radiation/levels, I am not sure it has been treated as a ”zero failure” SF indicator. Some possible points where this breaks have been known for a while. e.g. https://t.co/KIpQ1AMVtp.
