Gender convergence has stalled in high-income countries.
Goldin: further progress requires changes in firm practices.
But we know little about what makes firms adopt such practices or how effective they are.

🚨 New Working Paper 🆕
Discussions about new disruptive technologies often have a tone of inevitability. For example, it is popular to attempt to estimate the number of jobs which will be automated in the future, because technology is expected to advance at a certain rate. 1/
Main results:
Work councils helped workers by increasing retention, keeping their wages constant and avoiding cuts, in contrast to wage cuts at firms w/o worker representation. we also explore various mechanisms like labor market tightness, training and productivity effects. 4/
25% of German firms provide childcare (on site!).
This seems to provide retention benefits to firms: mothers are more likely to return to work AT the firm they were previously employed at. (It doesn’t seem to affect the return to work decision overall)
@MartinHaus93@annastansbury Thanks a lot for the question! It is the latter, so 25% of workers are in those firms. (And some of the firms in this number may also provide/buy off-site services for their workers to be complete.)
The effects of workplace digitalisation are well studied on workers’ wages and economic inequality. But how does technological progress affect workers’ health?
