The future of African healthcare will not be built by choosing between training new physicians and engaging our diaspora. We must do both.
Training a specialist takes 15–16 years. But across the world, thousands of highly trained African physicians, nurses, scientists, engineers, and healthcare leaders are already prepared to serve. The opportunity before us is not only brain gain—it is brain circulation: creating systems that allow expertise, innovation, investment, and mentorship to flow back home.
Today, I invite every member of the African healthcare diaspora to join the INTIMA Diaspora Health Alliance (IDHA). Whether you can give a week, a month, a year, or simply your expertise from afar, you can help build institutions that will serve generations.
This is also a respectful call to African governments, especially Ethiopia: let us make it easier for our diaspora to return and contribute. Competitive opportunities, safe working environments, housing support, streamlined licensing, and meaningful partnerships are not expenses—they are investments in national capacity.
Many of us never forgot where we came from. We remember the communities that raised us, the teachers who believed in us, and the neighbors who shared what little they had so we could dream bigger. Most diaspora physicians do not want to simply visit home—they want to help build it.
But they can do even more than practice medicine. They can return as physicians, educators, innovators, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, investors, and advocates for stronger healthcare systems.
Africa’s greatest natural resource is not beneath its soil—it is its people.
Let us bring our knowledge home. Let us circulate opportunity. Let us build institutions worthy of the next generation.
Join the movement. Join the INTIMA Diaspora Health Alliance.
👉Together, we can transform brain drain into brain circulation—and hope into lasting systems.
