A most enjoyable evening was had by all at Professor Joe Keane's Inaugural lecture. His audience was engaged by his wit and humour while delivering a fascinating talk on his life, work, research and his vision for the future.
Tuberculosis: 10.6 million cases and 1.6 million deaths in 2021. Global TB report released by @WHO yesterday. Terrible stats with rates of TB increased to 2017 levels due to the impact of COVID and massive shortfall in funding for this devastating disease. We must do better.

A cure for tuberculosis was found in 1943. Laureate Selman Waksman (shown) began systematic studies of the growth of tubercle bacteria. His colleague, Albert Schatz, isolated streptomycin from a bacterium, which proved to be the first effective medicine against TB.
