« Cet automne, nous entamerons des discussions intenses avec l’UE, la 2ème plus grande économie mondiale, pour établir un partenariat économique et sécuritaire beaucoup plus fort ».

Un changement stratégique profond qui survient dès le lendemain même de l'annonce du retrait des négociations avec les États-Unis. Certes, il y avait déjà depuis longtemps une volonté canadienne de se rapprocher de l'UE mais le timing ici est important.

Pour « bâtir un Canada fort », Mark Carney souhaite se rapprocher d'un partenaire qui partage les mêmes valeurs et surtout qui est fiable. L'Union Européenne est extrêmement attrayante même pour des pays aussi développés que le Canada.

Il faut imaginer les analystes à Washington qui voient leur meilleur allié abandonner l'idée de traiter avec les États-Unis et se tourner entièrement vers les Européens, ceux-là mêmes qui sont critiqués et conspués constamment par Donald Trump.

Or, le monde ne s'arrête pas à Donald Trump. Il peut tout détruire dans un caprice, les Européens et les Canadiens continueront de construire, entre eux, un avenir meilleur, d'égal à égal et dans le respect.
