A U.S. congressman wants to change how we legally “own” video games.

Rep. Ritchie Torres has announced plans to introduce the Power To The Players Act, a bill that would direct the FTC to create rules protecting consumers who buy video games.

The proposal would give players three basic rights:

>The right to own the games they purchase, rather than simply receiving a revocable license
>The right to keep playing games after online servers are shut down, through an offline mode
>The right to transfer or resell games they own

Torres argues that if a company can take a game away simply by shutting down its servers, then the consumer didn’t really buy the game in the first place.

Torres also hopes the legislation could eventually establish a precedent for ownership rights across other parts of the digital economy:

“If you pay for it, you own it.”

Sen. Ryan Mishler’s property tax plan, explained in normie language:

Mishler’s plan is focused specifically on homestead property taxes.

He says don’t call it “eliminating” property taxes. Call it a 100% homestead tax credit.

Why?

• Local governments have roughly $52 billion in debt backed by property-tax revenue.

• Simply eliminating property taxes could create bond and legal problems for those local governments because the debt was issued with property-tax revenue supporting it.

• Instead, homeowners would gradually get a 100% credit on their homestead property tax over 5 years. A 100% credit = a $0 property tax balance.

• Other property taxes would remain, including commercial, agricultural, apartments and non-homestead properties.

Mishler used Kosciusko County as an example.

Single-family homes there generate about $81.3 million in property taxes.

Only $44.4 million comes from homesteads.

The other $36.9 million comes from non-homestead residential properties, including lake homes owned by people who live elsewhere.

Completely eliminating property taxes could shift that burden onto year-round residents.

So how do you replace the $44.4 million?

Mishler’s answer: local option income taxes.

And here's the interesting part:

All but 14 Indiana counties currently have enough LOIT capacity to go to 100%.

So the argument is that the mechanism to replace the homestead property-tax revenue already exists.

Each local government would decide whether to raise its local income tax enough to replace some or all of the property-tax revenue.

Basically:

$0 homestead property tax

but

the local government still gets its money.

The tax revenue doesn’t disappear.

The revenue source changes.

And that's the part people need to understand before yelling “property taxes eliminated!”

He also adds that if you have caps, you'll have to get more people to move into your area to collect more income tax.

It is WILD what is happening to Fishers’ demographics.

In 1990, fewer than 1 in 20 residents were a racial or ethnic minority.

By 2024, that jumped to more than 1 in 4.

A few numbers from Fishers’ 2025 Community Health Assessment:

• 71.3% of residents are non-Hispanic White
• 9.7% are Asian(includes Indians), compared with 2.7% statewide
• 7.2% identify as other/multiple races
• Nearly 14,000 foreign-born residents, up from fewer than 150 in 1990
• Foreign-born residents now make up 13.3% of Fishers
• Nearly 12% speak a language other than English at home
• 2.1% speak Spanish and 1.3% speak Arabic at home

And here’s another interesting one:
Among Fishers residents under 45, nearly 1 in 3 are now a racial or ethnic minority.
For residents 65 and older, it’s about 1 in 8.

India is the largest foreign-born population in Fishers

RIP Fishers

15 Min City for Carmel?

Carmel hired Opticos Design, an urban planning and design firm that specializes in “Missing Middle Housing,” to study Carmel’s zoning.

And the report is pretty clear about what they want.

They say 76% of Carmel’s land is zoned only for detached single family homes and call that a barrier.

Their recommendations include allowing more duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, cottage courts, small multifamily buildings and ADUs.

They also want reduced parking requirements and more housing in “walkable” neighborhoods where daily needs are within roughly a 10 minute walk.

Sound familiar?

It has a lot of the same planning principles associated with the 15 minute city concept:
More housing density, walkable neighborhoods, daily services nearby and less dependence on cars.

Then comes my favorite part.

Opticos calls places like Portland, Seattle, Sacramento, San Diego and Minneapolis “Middle Housing Implementation Success Stories.”

The plan isn't simply about adding a few more housing options. It could fundamentally change the zoning and development patterns that helped make Carmel what it is today.

Someone should ask Sue Finkam why she wants to make Carmel more like places people are leaving.

Alvin Lui from @CourageHabit wrote an article about the report.

🚨 RUBIO JUST SAID THE NUMBER THEY NEVER WANTED ON TV 🚨

Americans work 40 years.
They retire.
Social Security: $800. $900. A thousand a month.

Somebody who got here from Cuba three months ago: $1,500 a month.

Marco Rubio said it out loud.

“So imagine if you’ve been working here for 40 years and your Social Security check is smaller than the benefits going to a 28-year-old, able-bodied person who just got here. That’s real. That happens. That’s happening every day. That makes no sense.”

You paid in.
They landed.
They beat your check.

That’s not compassion.
That’s a slap in the face with your own tax dollars.

[The Real Mike Rowe @mikeroweworks]

A couple years ago, Mikala Sposito applied for a work ethic scholarship from my foundation. She asked for $2,700.00 to help realize her dream of becoming a welder. (Actually, her first dream was to become an Olympian. As a kid, she excelled at horseback riding, dance, soccer, and track, but not quite at the Olympic level. So, Mikala adjusted her dream and focused on something within her reach. Precisely the kind of commonsense approach to making a living we try to encourage.) Toward that end, Mikala filled out the application, jumped through all the necessary hoops, and signed the S.W.E.A.T. Pledge, as all applicants must.

According to our internal ranking system, which is inherently subjective and relative to each batch of new applicants, Mikala scored a 94, and was awarded $2,100.00, or roughly 80% of what she asked for. This is typical of the average percentage awarded to an excellent applicant. As a rule, we almost never award the entire amount requested. We want our recipients to have some skin in the game, and we encourage all applicants to apply for additional scholarship funds elsewhere, which Mikala did. But in this case, if I had it to do over again, I think I’d have awarded Mikala the full $2,700.00. Why? Because this woman is precisely why I award work ethic scholarships in the first place, as recent headlines prove. Headlines all over the country that identify Mikala Sposito as the sole welder to represent Team USA in the upcoming @WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai.

This is a very big deal. The World Skills competition is often referred to as the Olympics of the skilled trades, so it looks like Mikala’s dream is coming true after all. And it seems to me her journey is worth a brief encapsulation. Before she applied for a scholarship from mikeroweWORKS, Mikala demonstrated an affinity for welding in SkillsUSA. As a senior at Dexter High School, she won 1st Place at the SkillsUSA Michigan high school competition and went on to place 14th nationally. Then, as a freshman at Washtenaw Community College, she repeated her success by taking 1st Place in the Michigan college division. She then advanced to nationals, where she finished 8th in the country. That earned her an invitation to the Team USA pre-trials, which whittled the nation's top 16 young welders down to three. At the final USA Weld Trials at the Robotics Technology Park in Huntsville, Alabama, each competitor was evaluated on precision, safety, technical execution, craftsmanship, and multi-process capabilities under extreme time constraints. Mikala Sposito took the Gold, officially becoming the first woman to represent the United States in welding at WorldSkills. Next week, she’ll face off against the absolute best of the best from all over the world.

I should point out that Mikala would prefer it if the press didn’t make a big deal of her gender, and I completely understand. (She’s a welder – not a “weld-her.”) But today, the industry is in desperate need of proof that women can and do excel in the trades. Nationally, just 4.3% of tradespeople are female. At mikeroweWORKS, our female applicants are closer to 20%, but I assure you that percentage could be much higher. Companies are anxious to recruit talented welders of any gender, and women need to understand and believe the opportunities are real. Mikala prove that in spades, and I want to offer her my sincere congratulations, and invite all of you to do the same. Because Mikala Sposito is exactly what our country needs a lot more of. People who understand that talent is never enough to compensate for laziness.

In her application, she wrote, “Hard work beats talent any day of the week, and nobody is going to outwork me. Period.”

She also connected with every point of the S.W.E.A.T. Pledge but said the final tenet resonated with her the most. “Some people choose to be lazy. Some people choose to sleep in. I choose to work my butt off.”
My favorite quote, however, is Mikala’s response to seasoned professionals who see her wield a torch and call her a “natural.”

“I’m not a natural,” she says. Far from it. And none of this came easy. I worked and trained 60-80 hours a week for two years to get here.”

Regardless of what happens in Shanghai, the job offers are already piling up, including the most recent from SpaceX. She hasn’t graduated yet, but the future looks bright, and I for one would not bet against her.

PS. I never do this, but since my name is in the title of the foundation, I suppose I can. Mikala – please accept the additional $600 you requested from mikeroweWORKS two years ago. Shanghai is expensive, and since you’re representing all of us, we’d like to provide you with a little walking around money. The check is in the mail.

Now…go get the gold!
