@Adam_Creme Something to do with voltage curves. Older dimmers cut off peaks of a/c voltage sine to regulate power.

@Adam_Creme This is incredibly boring, but I only found after extensive research that apparently led bulbs are incompatible with older (or almost all) dimmer switches. All my led bulbs kept blowing because I can't pay £££s to upgrade the switches. Have to use halogen instead.
