There’s an old guy, maybe 80, at my gym. He wears dress socks and loafs around the bench press for 20 minutes between sets. The 'bros' get annoyed. They roll their eyes because he’s taking up equipment. One day, I saw him staring at the weights, looking lost. I walked over. 'Need a spot, sir?' He lit up. 'Would you mind? I’m trying to hit 95 pounds today.' I spotted him. He struggled, but he got it up. We high-fived. He told me, 'My wife passed in the spring. She used to walk on the treadmill while I lifted. I come here now just to smell the rubber and remember her.' Now, I’m his unofficial spotter. The 'bros' stopped rolling their eyes; now they fist-bump him when he walks in.
