8 years since starting a campaign on self-employed parental leave, things are shifting. Together with PregnantThenScrewed @dadshiftuk@dopeblackdads we spoke to @jreynoldsMP about Labour’s review of parental leave, launched today. Self-employed parents are included. Thank you!
Great news! Thanks for all your work in this @stellacreasy now time for self-employed community & unions to gather evidence (we know it’s out there) for giving parental leave to *all* dads, non birthing parents and adopters. Not just those who are employed.
Paid and protected leave for all parents would close the gender pay gap, support dad’s mental health and probably save a lot of relationships. The government now committed to producing plans by June next year- Help keep the pressure up to make this happen! https://t.co/8o4uKMy7mf
Welcome news for employed parents, however self-employed parents need to just crack on and keep working when they suffer a devastating loss, or go through the traumatic process of applying for maternity allowance, as if they were expecting a healthy baby. Much work still to do.
This is great news, but no help to self-employed families who are stuck with inflexible Maternity Allowance, and no paternity leave no matter the circumstances of their baby’s birth. Let’s hope Labour’s review of parental leave addresses this unfair situation.
Today I am pleased to announce there will be a new right to neonatal care leave which will be available from April. This will support new parents who have to face having a newborn in hospital with a right to leave from work whilst their baby is in neonatal care.
🚨 NEW: Tube drivers have been offered the following deal by TFL to get them to call off strikes:

🚨There's a parliament debate on paternity leave tomorrow.
Can you email your MP to ask them to speak at the debate and raise the profile of paternity leave ? We've made an online tool that takes 30 seconds to use.

Excited about government employment rights bill today. The devil is in the detail - not clear that self-employed parents (as opposed to workers) will qualify for day one rights for paternity, and shared parental pay. Scope of parental leave review must include *all* parents.
The UK's paternity leave policy is the worst in Europe - just two weeks paid at < half the minimum wage. Today we've launched The Dad Shift to help change that. Read more here: https://t.co/HHS3OIcgKs and sign our letter calling for better pat leave here:

We look forward to working with @AngelaRayner@justinmadders on some of the detail on the incredibly welcome proposals on workers rights, including day one parental leave for all workers!
The King's just announced this Government will be signing the New Deal for Working People into law.
Add your name to celebrate this and show your support for getting this done, whatever the bad bosses have to say:

This is why we have been calling for the government to give freelancers the same parental leave as employees - currently freelance dads have no entitlements. 😢
At this year’s Conference, Equity’s Northern Ireland Committee’s motion, proposed by Committee member Marina Hampton on supporting Parental Pay Equality @ShPPEquality = Unanimously Passed! Thank you to all who voted YES and to @EquityDandD for seconding#EquityConference2024
It’s Black maternal health week! Despite progress, Black women are still four times more likely to die in pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period in the UK (MBRRACE 2023)
Each day has a different theme all under the overarching goal of 'Advancing Black Maternal Health'
One of the biggest issues around UC for us is how Maternity Allowance is treated as unearned income, yet Maternity Pay is treated as earned income. New mums claiming MA are penalised, despite standard rate MA being dependant on earnings, similarly to SMP.
Time to talk Universal Credit. We're 10yrs into its roll-out, so understandably interest has waned. But it's impact on Britain has built - whoever wins the next election will be governing a "Universal Credit Britain" with 7m families - and big winners and losers - on it by 2029🧵
We’re speaking to DWP on Wednesday to discuss issues #selfemployed people are having applying for #MaternityAllowance.
Do let us know what isn’t working for you - specially around class 2 NIC changes - and we’ll pass it on!
