In defense of Indian 🇮🇳 democracy!

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi most successful visit to Norway a minor incident happened. A Norwegian journalist demanded that the prime minister starts holding press conferences. She claimed that Indian democracy is in bad shape.

May be its time to pause? May be its time to be a bit curious to the world’s largest democracy?

Two weeks ago five Indian states and territories held elections. The turn out in the battlefield state of West Bengal was 94%. In the last local election in Norway it was 62%, in many European local elections turn out is below 50%. Can voting in massive numbers be a signal Indians trust their democratic process?

In the same election BJP won big in Assam and West Bengal. It lost even bigger in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Can this diversity be a signal that Indian democracy is reflecting the will of the people?

The journalist referred to a democracy ranking putting India at 157 in the world, behind many dictatorships and deeply troubled states. When a ranking is so obviously contrary to common sense, why not ask critical questions to those making the ranking rather than demand that leaders shall comment on nonsense? I recommend Salvatore Babones book “Dharma democracy”. The book debunks convincingly the flawed methodology of these rankings.

It was referred to a ranking claiming it’s very dangerous to be a journalist in India. Reality is that it is more dangerous to be journalist in the US and far more dangerous in the vast majority of other nations in the world.

Let’s be real. India is not perfect. Of course there are incidents. India has a population the size of North America, South America and Europe combined. But India is much more peaceful than Europe or the Americas. That’s remarkable - given the ethnic, language and religious diversity of India and the many development challenges.

Unless we consider democracy a form of government only suited for some very small, peaceful and homogeneous Western European nations, may be we should commend Indian democracy?

India is the only major former UK colony which became and has remained a democracy. Its sometimes claimed that the Brits taught India democracy. If that was the case why isn’t Myanmar or Pakistan or the Gulf kingdoms democracies??? Reality is that Indian democracy is both homegrown and extraordinary successful.

I do not get angry at the trolls but see them as Intellectual Refugees. They are people who are still living in the Deficit Era (1990s) while the nation has moved into the Surplus Era (2026).

"But China..." is a new argument trend & this is a psychological condition called Relative Deprivation Syndrome, mixed with a heavy dose of Pathological Comparison. It is the tragedy of the Indian middle class: we have been conditioned to view our progress not as an absolute climb, but as a race where we are always losing to a specific neighbor.

China’s progress is Top-Down (State-Driven). India’s progress is Bottom-Up (People-Driven). It is mathematically easier to build a bridge when you can displace 10000 people with a single signature. It is infinitely harder & more resilient to build a bridge in a vibrant, chaotic democracy where every pillar requires a consensus.

India’s 0% Power Deficit/UPI Revolution happened despite the friction of 1.4 billion opinions. That is a Stress-Tested Success. China’s success has not been stress-tested by internal dissent yet.

Also, India’s data, statistics, & growth are audited by the world. When we hit 0% power deficit, it is a verified physical reality. When China reports growth, even their own provincial governors have admitted to adjusting the math.

Anyway, taking pride in India is not about being better than China; it is about recognizing that India is the world's largest Living Experiment in how a poor, colonized nation can become a space-faring, energy-surplus superpower w/o losing its soul/its vote. Jai Hind!

Sights like this are a rarity. All of them are above 70 years of age, competing in a 5000 m. A few of them in fact above 80 years. The zeal and the enthusiasm of them, re-validates the fact that dreams have no expiry dates. I have seen many people above the age of 50 take up fitness and activity, thereby changing old habits.

This probably is also a wake up call to many who retire into their lonely rooms, taking refuge of internet or TV to spend their time…

I’m always surprised by how many people still believe that the Indian media is biased, but that Western outlets somehow stand apart as neutral, objective, almost immune to influence. That assumption itself is proof of how effective modern propaganda has been.

About ten years ago, I was on a flight from London to Berlin. I happened to be seated next to an elderly woman who had that unmistakable presence of someone with authority. We started talking, the way strangers sometimes do at 30,000 feet. Turned out, she was a senior partner at a powerful PR firm, one that didn’t just handle brands, but also some Western governments.

For the next couple of hours, we spoke about global politics, economics, power. She was sharp, articulate, and refreshingly honest. As the plane began to descend, I asked her one last question
‘’What do you enjoy most about your job?”
She paused. Looked out of the window for a moment. Like she was thinking about how much to reveal. Then turned back to me with a smile
“Ninety percent of what you believe,” she said, “is what I want you to believe.”
She let it hang.
“That’s power, right?”

In that single sentence, something shifted. My confidence in how informed I thought i am, was just a result of how well her industry and the publications had done their job.
And continue to do so.
