The watermelon thing started after emancipation. Watermelon seeds were cheap so Black people began growing/selling Watermelon’s to survive. It was lucrative. Biggest customer were white, but in order to kill the business, whites demonized watermelon claiming it was a Black thing.
What happened to you is you were pipelined... you weren't necessarily recruited. It's sad, but recruiters and hiring managers do this a lot more and more where they will encourage ppl to apply - often knowing they have a selected candidate... or often knowing they're not truly going to be in a position to hire until months later. So, they pipeline candidates for the "just in case".
Also, another thing ppl do not know that contributes to this is with DEI becoming more and more present in business, most business have percentages they had establish and adhere to in order to make themselves look "DEI compliant"; X amount of applicants have to be from XYZ demographic. And, when they have not met their DEI margin... they also use the tactics which the Recruiter used to "fluff the numbers". You apply to what you think is an opportunity truly for you... whole time they just needed to be able to say this many candidates came from this demographic.
All of this is going to blow up on Recruiters and Hiring Managers and Businesses as soon as ppl find other ways to have more control of their recruitment processes... and/or when ppl just simply stop applying to jobs all together. Right now, Recruiters rely on "someone is always looking for a job".
In 1945, Lena Baker, was put on trial for killing her white employer, for raping her. Though she claimed self defense, she was sentenced to death by an all white male jury.
The local newspaper reported her death with the headline “Baker Burns.”
She was pardoned 60 years after her death.
Her last statements were,”What I done, I did in self-defense, or I would have been killed myself. Where I was I could not overcome it. God has forgiven me. I have nothing against anyone. I picked cotton for Mr. Pritchett, and he has been good to me. I am ready to go. I am one in the number. I am ready to meet my God. I have a very strong conscience.”

Racial segregation in America’s schools is legal & maintained by a mechanistic process that operates seamlessly & efficiently.
And somehow, we are not outraged.
