In early April of 1938, Robert Hale Merriman (UNR Class of 1935), commander of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, disappeared during a chaotic retreat while under fire by Spanish Fascist forces at the village of Corbera d’Ebre.

Alice L. Smith (1902-1990) was an early Civil Rights advocate in NV. She & her husband, Al, moved to Reno in 1938. In 1946, they founded the local NAACP chapter. Throughout her life, she worked tirelessly to enact positive change in NV through community service and advocacy.

In 1899, Jeanne Wier came to UNR to teach history & political science. She provided leadership in the dept. till her 1940 retirement. In 1904, she founded the Nevada Historical Society. She also was key in NV’s suffrage movement 📸 from “Nevada Row” by Joe C. Rock & Eric Burke

Maya Miller advocated for environmental causes, welfare rights, & international human rights. She spoke out against nuclear waste storage in NV & was key in establishing the bi-state park at Sand Harbor. Her legacy as an activist for the environment & women continues today.

Sarann Knight-Preddy (1920-2014) was the 1st woman of color to obtain a gaming license in NV. She ran the Tonga Club, Hawthorne's only gaming club for African-Americans. She was a former VP of Las Vegas's NAACP, & the first president of the NV Black Chamber of Commerce.
