@skye17137315 Online classes have both their pros and cons. Personally, I'm completely lost in my classes and feel disconnected but at the same time, it is nice to work at my own pace while also being able to do my own thing. Overall, I would rate my experience a 3/5.
@Michael_RU20 Everyone has insecurities that they may or may not want to hide. As humans, we have chase after this concept of being "wanted" based on different criteria. It's possible that people would rather hide their true selves in order to project a better version of who they really are.
@JulesRutgers I find that society has taken away the normalcy from social media where things used to be "casual". Now, we live in a society where perfection is insisted and where social media is a form of projecting a certain image or as a way to immediately boost one's self-esteem.
Throughout the course, we discussed how social media has changed our perceptions and actions. Do you think we the users are still in control of these platforms and are we giving them the power or do you think social media is in a sense, controlling its users? #selfsocietyclass
@amorin_faith I rarely check this function on my phone probably because I am afraid of checking the realities of my online activity. However, it's important to keep yourself accountable for how much time you're spending online vs. offline.
@JosephC24786253 This is the sad reality of technology and especially social media platforms. Millenials and Gen Z as well as future generations are going to have the hardest time going against these behaviors as we all grew up with technology.
@uzair34037793 Though social media has many pros, it has just as many cons, perhaps even more. The emotional and mental strain that comes from social media is extremely sad and it's unfortunate that the system is built to be addictive.
Apps especially like TikTok are forms of addiction as it constantly gives users unending content based on online behavior. Perhaps, it's a "function of the relative newness of the activity" (LaRose, Kim, Peng). #selfsocietyclass
@rojas_an19 Billie Eilish sadly gets so much hate for not caring about what other people think about her image. Whether she wears baggy clothes and covers up or wears less clothing, she gets hated on for her decisions and her body.
@JulesRutgers This is a form of harassment I have never been able to understand. The point of muckbangs and ASMR is to watch people eat a lot of food (usually unhealthy) and listening to the sounds. If people don't like that type of content all they have to do is not watch it.
@chuyuan_chen Unfortunately, this is a prime example of harassment. Clearly, the hate was so brutal to the point Sulli felt as if she needed to take her own life. It's sad that this could've been prevented if people were more understanding and less hateful.
#selfsocietyclass Jordyn Woods received all kinds of hate and threats after the cheating controversy with Tristan Thompson. Everyone was so easy to hate on her as "misogyny is not only widespread and deeply entrenched in Western culture, it is naturalized" (Weiser & Miltner, 171
@bahlangelina Wow, I actually completely forgot about Poptropica but I remember I also used to try to make my avatar depict the type of kid I was or I would try and make it look as funny as possible.
@jkasica30 Growing up I played Club Penguin all the time. It's interesting to see how that game was also considered a virtual world because as kids we never thought deep into how an online community we were all apart of could also be seen as a "virtual world".
@Michael_RU20 Bitmojis is a creative example of virtual words using avatars. It truly is a way for some people to express their real-life selves in form of an online avatar.
The main virtual world I am apart of is Instagram any other social media platform. These sites have caused users to feel constant instant gratification because "interaction in virtual worlds occur in real-time; users experience immediacy" (Sanchez, 9). #selfsocietyclass
@kmr3441 This counterpublic account does not only provide content for women or women seen as feminists but also men who are unaware of certain issues regarding women and women's' rights. Great example!
@mattabeRU This account is a great example of a counterpublic as it is an account created for a purpose of preventing a common recurring issue. These types of accounts attempt to introduce social media with proper warnings and education.
@joenha2 I agree this protest can be a form of a counterpublic as it was one of the biggest events of 2016-2017 in Korea. It was not a protest that included just a certain age group but included individuals from young and old, protesting against the past president Park Geun Hye.
#selfsocietyclass The account Karenisinsane on Instagram is an example of a counterpublic as they expose "Karen" like people and their wrongful and inappropriate behaviors through videos or pictures other people have taken.
