@JulesRutgers Many studies have shown that social media has caused adolescents to self scrutinize themselves because of the standards they seen on social media.
@SharonK08535231 I think because of the way social media creates a user profile on all their users, it takes control out of the user's hands, even if they are not aware of it
@yolyssetheman#selfsocietyclass I think the possibility of making a living, just by using social media has caused people to use all sorts of methods to get famous
@MikeMor58070944 I think online harassment is so common on any online platform because of the anonymity factor. When people are fully aware that their is no accountability, they will act in unpredictable ways. #selfsocietyclass
@LaygoClaudine I think this website was so popular because of all the potential of toxicity that could happen here. Giving anyone, (especially teenagers) the feeling of 100% anonymity can bring unpredictable results. #selfsocietyclass
#selfsocietyclass After months of showing visible signs of mental illness, as well as hinting at suicide, popular streamer Etika was found dead in a lake in 2019. He had committed suicide after scrutiny from fans who caused "abuse and disruptive behaviors" (Gardner, 2016).
@jkasica30 If it were not for social media, we would not even have heard of these protests, because it is in a different country and we already have so much craze over our current election
#selfsocietyclass The 2016-2017 south korean protests that called for president Park Geun Hye to resign are an example of counter-public because thousands of protestors went in public to stand against a president who was allowing a cult leader to influence her political decisions
@LaygoClaudine I think social media changes the way we think, but in a negative way. In my opinion, the influx of photos of others looking their best, causes many people to make self comparisons and feel more negative about themselves.
@KristinaDeRobe5 I think before social media, it was a bigger deal to see celebrities perform or even be seen. Because of this they depended a lot on their public appearances and their personalities to appeal to the public.
@Atul95982518 Tik-Tok is a very user friendly app that has a lot of appeal for all different sorts of online communities. I wish I was a very good chef and I could make cooking tik toks.
#selfsocietyclass In our society, people ensure that their best self is shown on social media. Has an influx of positive news, content, and apps made it harder to stand out?
@ericaandself Hi, I think this is a very insightful point to make. I think because of covid, people are more eager to impress, but also have this in the back of their mind. (that they are still able to pursue companionship, alongside the comfort of being home.
@JulesRutgers The lack of face-to-face interactions also encourage anti-social behaviors. In my opinion, social media has only prepared us to be even more antisocial during something like covid
@BursetDaniela I think your quote is very useful here. Also because online interactions are a "performance" I think Covid has made people very eager for companionship and people are putting on lots of "performances"
#selfsocietyclass#COVIDdating Ranzini and Lutz claim that interactions are actual "performances" in which someone is presented in a strategized and spontaneous manner. The pandemic has impacted online dating scene and the hashtag is filled with people "performing" for others.
