A couple comments on this very good thread. First, note what is waiting to be built - it’s all clean. Markets aren’t trying to build dirty power because the economics don’t pencil. Our generation mix is getting a lot cleaner - not fast enough, but the forward build is clean.
Yesterday was huge. We officially opened the country's first commercial Direct Air Capture facility and it was exciting to share the moment with Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and California Lt Governor Eleni Kounalakis.
This facility is only possible because of a group of people that's committed themselves to moving at the urgent speed required to stop climate change. What you don't see in these photos are the long days Heirloomers spent working in 100+ degree heat, the hours spent planning how to build something that had never been built before, and the hope of a generation to solve climate change, the greatest challenge of our time.
This facility will capture up to 1,000 tons of CO2 each year. We *know* we have a long way to go – but you’re looking at a blueprint for what billion-ton scale removal can look like.
The list of thank-yous we owe is long and includes the City and community of Tracy, leaders who are championing carbon removal (from the Oval Office to elementary school classrooms), our clean power provider, PG&E, the union workforce that constructed this facility, and many others.
I really encourage everyone to have a read of how we built this facility and all of the partnerships that made it possible: https://t.co/MBkflhTY6A
The founder of @Breakthrough@BillGates breaks down our progress in the energy transition.
And there's a whole section on carbon management!

I’m so so thrilled to share that Microsoft has made an advanced purchase of 315,000 metric tons of Heirloom’s carbon removals. This is a validation of the confidence they’ve held in our ability to deploy our low-cost DAC solution at scale

We’re deeply grateful to the leadership at Microsoft for their partnership and world-leading ambition to become a carbon negative company by 2030 and remove all of the CO2 the company has ever emitted by 2050.
Heirloom's mission is to help *reverse* climate change. Today marks a big milestone in that journey. Our Project Cypress has won upto $600M in DAC hub funding from the Department of Energy to build a Megaton facility. So so proud of the @heirloomcarbon team for getting us here.
Proud to announce the megaton milestone that our Louisiana DAC Hub, Project Cypress, has received Notification of Selection from @POTUS's @ENERGY! With our partners @Battelle and @Climeworks, we’ll be building a facility that removes (at least) 1 million tons of CO2 per year.
With the prospect of $600m in funding, we're on the road to catalyze DAC technology, a new class of jobs, and carbon removal at large, all while investing in the communities that we’ll call home in Louisiana.
We’re also excited to announce 3 other DAC Hubs we’re joining in the Pacific Northwest, Illinois, and Florida, where we'll hone our technology across different climatic conditions in collaboration with a wide array of experts, technologists, and storage partners.

The real impact of the DOE CO2 procurement effort is not the tons themselves and they're probably the least impactful.
It's the criteria DOE used to include/exclude CDR technologies.
This is a huge signal to the VCM, Europe and the world. What is govt procurement grade CDR?
Congrats to @Battelle, @Climeworks and @heirloomcarbon on this important #DAC hub application.
If this application is selected, GCS would permanently store the captured carbon underground at our southwestern Louisiana site.
We are proud to support this work on #carbonremoval.
@reinpk I got many emails to pull money out way before their CEO's comments, so the bank run was effectively unstoppable by that time. It's really sad; I wish big VCs / NVCA banded together published a statement proactively
