The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a strategic consultation from 17 to 18 August to support the preparation of its annual trend analysis document for the 2019 Ethiopian fiscal year. Held under the theme “Ethiopia and Interconnected Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Trends,” the consultation brought together several stakeholders to assess developments shaping Ethiopia’s national, regional, continental, and global environment.
Scholars and researchers from Addis Ababa University, think tanks, and national and international research institutions took part in the strategic consultation held on the 18th of August 2026. Opening the strategic consultation, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Hadera Abara said the trend analysis is particularly important in light of rapidly changing and unpredictable regional and global geopolitical and geoeconomic developments. He stressed the importance of understanding these interconnected developments proactively and scientifically in order to formulate appropriate policy responses.
Ambassador Hadera further underlined Ethiopia’s commitment to continue its contribution to peace and security as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council, and its efforts to promote the Green Legacy initiative at the continental level and support the African Union’s institutional reform process. He described the current regional, continental and global environment as complex, dynamic and interconnected, emphasizing that strategic consultations of this nature provide an important platform for scholars and experts to exchange ideas and contribute to comprehensive strategy formulation.
The strategizing session held on the 17th of August 2026 brought representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Labor and Skills, the Ethiopian Investment Commission, and the Ethiopian Investment Holdings. Opening the session, Zerubabel Getachew, Director General of the Situation Room, stressed that annual, multi-sectoral, and participatory trend analysis enables Ethiopia to better strategize the effective implementation of its foreign policy and advance its geoeconomic and geopolitical interests. He further noted that such analysis helps the country remain proactive and vigilant in identifying and capitalizing on emerging opportunities while addressing challenges in an evolving international environment.
The consultation featured presentations and discussions on financial and investment trends, foreign trade, tourism, overseas employment, geopolitical trends in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and the Middle East, broader African geopolitical trends and institutionalization, including global peace and security developments.
The annual trend analysis, as one of the Ministry’s core products, intends to support informed and enhanced foreign policy decision-making, as it identifies emerging opportunities and challenges and informs the implementation of Ethiopia’s foreign policy objectives during the current fiscal year.

Solidarity in Gamo: Restoring Hope and Supporting Recovery
Through the 2018 E.C. Summer Volunteer Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its affiliated institutions, I had the distinct honor of visiting Western Abaya in the Gamo Zone of the South Ethiopia Regional State today, the 15th of August,2026. Alongside my colleague, H.E. State Minister Ambassador Hadera Abera, Higher Officials of the Zone, and our senior leadership team, we spent invaluable time with communities working to rebuild their lives following the tragic landslides. It brought immense joy to our entire delegation to translate our collective solidarity into meaningful, life-changing action on the ground.
During our time with the community, we were privileged to provide 12.5 million Ethiopian birr to support the completion of 40 homes for displaced families, restoring safety and dignity to those who have lost so much. In a shared effort to protect the local environment from future climate shocks, we also joined hands with residents to plant trees, rooting a green legacy directly into the landscape. Furthermore, we were honored to contribute essential children’s clothing and women’s hygiene products to further support the well-being of local families.
As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its affiliated institutions and all FDRE Missions, we are deeply honored to have had the opportunity to stand alongside our fellow citizens on the ground and translate our support into meaningful action.
Our volunteer mission goes far beyond a single visit; it represents our enduring vow to help these vibrant communities transition from recovery to long-term prosperity.
We stand unwavering in our partnership with the regional and local administrations to ensure the sustainable resettlement, livelihood restoration, and well-being of our fellow citizens.
Pleasure to be part of “Solidarity in Gamo: Restoring Hope and Supporting Recovery.

Leaving a Legacy of Solidarity and Hope in Afar.
Today (August 12, 2026), in the Afar Region, I had the privilege of launching the 2018 E.C. Summer Volunteer Service and Green Legacy Initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its affiliated institutions. It was a moment of great joy and pride to stand alongside our brothers and sisters in Afar and turn our commitment to Ethiopian solidarity in action.
This year, our volunteer initiative will deliver 10 homes for vulnerable families, a kindergarten school, and provide educational materials for our children in need, while also contributing to our Green Legacy through tree planting.
These are more than projects. Every home is a promise of dignity, every school a pathway to opportunity, and every tree a gift to future generations. Our strength lies in standing together. From Afar, we are building solidarity, planting hope, and leaving a legacy for a greener and more inclusive Ethiopia.
Together, let us serve, build, and leave a lasting Legacy.

Today at the Ethiopian Embassy in Nairobi, I joined diplomats, the Ethiopian diaspora in Kenya, and friends of Ethiopia in a nationwide Green Legacy Initiative of planting 800 million seedlings in a single day.
Themed “Let’s Plant Hope this year’s Ethiopian Green Legacy Initiative aims to plant 800 million trees in one day. Under the initiative of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia has now planted more than 48 billion seedlings over the past seven years.
Ethiopia is at the forefront of climate diplomacy. The country’s green development model is attracting global interest and has contributed to Ethiopia’s selection to host COP32, a major international climate summit, a testament to the nation’s growing leadership in environmental action.
