My theory is that, in the earliest versions of the story, Achilles was explicitly a monster/villain.

Specifically, the Trojan War cycle is based on an *originally Trojan* (Hittite) story, The Slaying of the Dragon. Achilles is the dragon and Paris is the goddess-chosen hero.
