A recent study predicts that the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory will dramatically expand our knowledge of the solar system by discovering millions of new small celestial bodies.
Equipped with the 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope and the 3.2-gigapixel Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Camera, the observatory will survey the entire visible sky every few nights, generating 20 terabytes of data nightly.
This extensive data collection will enable the detection and analysis of various small bodies, including near-Earth objects, main-belt asteroids, Jupiter Trojans, trans-Neptunian objects, and Centaurs.
The Sorcha software, developed by the research team, simulates the observatory's capabilities and predicts significant increases in known populations of these objects, enhancing our understanding of solar system formation and improving planetary defense strategies.

‘The thinner tree was cut years ago and the big one has been holding and feeding it since then. They "wake up" together in the spring and "go to sleep" together in the autumn’
Inosculation is a natural phenomenon in which parts of two different trees, commonly but not exclusively the same species, grow together, self grafting and sharing nutrients
