In the wake of the devastating 7.7 R magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and neighbouring regions on March 28, 2025, Sewa International @Sewa_Intl has emerged as one of the first responders, launching immediate humanitarian operations in Myanmar and Thailand.

Relief efforts are being carried out in coordination with the Embassy of India, Yangon, the Government of India, and local partner organisations including the Hindu Family Relief Group.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), the disaster has claimed over 2,800 lives, injured more than 4,600 people, and displaced millions. The numbers are expected to rise as aftershocks continue and more areas are assessed.

“In every disaster, responding with humanity and compassion is our sacred duty,” said Global Coordinator of Sewa International Shyam Parande Ji. “We are committed to ensuring timely and dignified relief. Our teams are working closely with local partners, the Indian Embassy in Yangon, and community volunteers to meet urgent needs on the ground.”

Relief operations are being steered on the ground by Dr. Ram Niwas, with active interventions underway in hard-hit areas including Sagaing, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw.

The organisation has started community kitchens, distributing over 4,000 hot meals daily to survivors. Critical, life-saving medicines have been shipped from India, and surgical lights have been installed at Sagaing General Hospital to enable emergency procedures at night.

Sewa International has also distributed UV-resistant tarpaulins, solar lanterns, blankets, tents, and plastic floor sheets to families forced to live in the open due to collapsed or unsafe structures.

In Thailand, where buildings also suffered damage due to tremors, Sewa International has established a 24x7 Help Desk at Chatuchak in Bangkok.

Sewa teams supported SAR-K9 search units in reaching trapped victims and are actively helping clear debris. Aid includes ready-to-eat meals, drinking water, hygiene kits, and protective gear for both affected families and frontline workers.

Sewa International, a 28-year-old humanitarian organisation rooted in Bharatiya ethos, operates in over 30 countries and has a longstanding record of disaster response and rehabilitation, working hand-in-hand with governments and civil society to serve humanity with dignity.

The Design Thinking Workshop emphasized the development of user-centric solutions, fostering innovation in products and services aimed at addressing social challenges. Fellows actively engaged in experience-based activities, where they were presented with real-world problems and tasked with devising practical, impact-driven solutions.

Through a structured approach encompassing Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test, participants explored the iterative process of design thinking, enhancing their ability to create human-centered innovations that drive meaningful change.

The panel provided valuable feedback and constructive insights, encouraging Fellows to deepen their impact and refine their approaches.

The day was filled with learning, reflection, and motivation, setting the tone for the upcoming Padyatra and immersive grassroots learning experience.
