They say that the village had its own petrol station for nearly 40 years from 1957. Castle Garage, on Westbury Road, was where Doug Reed carried out repairs, pumped fuel, provided a taxi service, ran coach trips, and sold cigarettes, sweets and ice lollies.

They say that in 1936 Philip Smith planted an orchard to grow and sell 10 types of apples. In 1989 Marjorie Reeves bought and donated the orchard to the village. Today it contains all 28 varieties of apple known to have grown in Wiltshire.

They say that each morning small farms in Wiltshire put milk churns onto wooden roadside platforms ready for Arthur Pearce’s fleet of red TK Bedford trucks to come clattering along, slide them aboard and leave an empty churn for tomorrow. One platform still remains on Lower Road.
