Video produced and released by the @bakuinitiative at the “Amritsar: June 1984 - Transnational Repression as a Continuation of Genocide” conference hosted at @BakDovl working with @SikhFedIntl
The Baku Initiative Group @bakuinitiative organised the third major event with the Sikh Federation International @SikhFedIntl in less than five months.
Yesterday Sikh representatives from across the globe met with Members of Parliament in the Azerbaijan Parliament and discussed:
- the 1984 Sikh Genocide and campaign for a Sikh homeland, Khalistan;
- transnational repression by the Indian government targeting Sikh activists in the Diaspora;
- the historic relationship between Sikhs and Azerbaijan; and
- the importance of preserving this shared heritage.
Sikh delegates then participated in a commemorative event at the historic Ateshgah, UNESCO World Heritage Site with longstanding historical connections to the Sikh community.
Today Sikh delegates participated in an international academic conference entitled “Amritsar: June 1984 - Transnational Repression as a Continuation of Genocide” hosted at Baku State University. @BakDovl
A major outcome of the visit was the formalisation of a Memorandum of Understanding between Sikh Federation International and the Baku Initiative Group.
The Indian government is understood to be deeply concerned with the work of Sikh Federation International and recent developments as governments and NGOs across the globe are interested to learn why the Indian government feels so threatened by the Sikh independence movement, the revolutionary teachings of the Sikh Gurus and the vision of a Sikh homeland, Khalistan making Halemi Raj (compassionate rule) a reality.
Italy has previously quietly expelled an Indian intelligence officer for transnational repression trying to assassinate Sikh activists in Italy.
One of those assassinated outside Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, in Bergamo was known to be on the Indian National Investigation Agency (NIA) hit list. Indian transnational repression was raised in Geneva last month.
Western nations if they value their sovereignty and rule of law need to break their silence and force the Indian government to be accountable @unhrcpr@MaryLawlorhrds@hrw@freedomhouse@amnesty@Irenekhan@bakuinitiative@NazilaGhanea

We have just written to @DanJarvisMBE to request an urgent meeting following the @Bloomberg revelation of UK intelligence from July 2023.
This disclosure has sent alarm-bells ringing for Sikh activists in the UK on the safety and security of Sikh activists who are clearly at risk and being kept in the dark.
@YvetteCooperMP the Foreign Secretary and @DavidAltonHL the Chair of the @HumanRightsCtte and @MichaelPolakLaw representing the family of Avtar Singh Khanda have been copied into the letter on this significant development.
UK regulator rules gurdwara allowed to display plaque with word ‘Khalistan’
When the complaint was made by India Today in December 2019 the @ChtyCommission should have immediately recognised the issue of Khalistan is a theological issue.
This decision after more than five and half years shows the Charity Commission is either incompetent or unacceptably had pressure put on it to drag out the issue.
The Sikh community has a right to know which it is.

The passing of 114-year-old Punjabi Sikh marathon runner S. Fauja Singh Ji in a road accident is deeply saddening.
He was a role model and inspiration to us all. Waheguru apne charana vich nivaas bakshe 🙏🏽
Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Joint Committee on Human Rights – Inquiry into transnational repression in the UK
The Sikh Federation (UK) has made a detailed 32-page submission to the Joint Committee for Human Rights chaired by @DavidAltonHL
Evidence has been set out covering a 40 year period.
It shows the Indian government under @narendramodi is the biggest and most aggressive perpetrator of transnational repression and foreign interference in the UK.
This view is now shared by Western security officials and human rights organisations.

In a communication to India, I join UN experts in raising concerns about the alleged killing of a Canadian, Mr. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Canada in June 2023, in retaliation against his political and human rights advocacy for the Sikh minority in India: https://t.co/vUh2lvfcM5
