6 yrs ago, I was just a digital freelancer offering content localisation services on freelancing platforms like Upwork and Fiverr.

By that time, being a digital freelancer in Tanzania was a lonely journey with many challenges

- There were no communities for freelancers in Tanzania.
- Few payment platforms were supporting Tanzania.
- Tanesco(Our Nepa) will wait for the time you have a client and switch off the electricity
- Internet services were expensive and weren’t faster.

So I decided to do this …..

I woke up one day and decided to be the first Tanzanian digital superhero. I wanted to see a change in my country, and I wasn’t patient enough to wait for the government and NGO’s to solve these challenges. I did the following.

- I co-founded Sanukakidijitali with Leyla Kurumbua, and we helped over 5000 Tanzanian youth to start their career online in just 2 years. Our story was featured by Local and international media outlets such as Tech Cabal, The Economist, and Mwananchi.

- I decided to accept every public speaking invitation to speak about the digital economy and why I believe it will solve the unemployment problem in Tanzania. I shared my story about how the internet changed my life on platforms such as TEDx, Slush events, Sahara Spark, and Tanzania Innovation Week.

- I decided to create a community on Telegram to learn together with over 20k+ members.

Results
When you log in to Upwork and filter for Tanzania freelancers with over $ 1k in earnings, you will realise that on every page, there are more than 5 people who attended my Upwork and digital jobs sessions/trainings.

Lastly, my message to my fellow youth is that digital jobs are the future of our economy. Equip yourself with digital skills, then apply for those jobs.
