Skill Entropy is a directional, pairwise measure of how difficult it is for a model to switch from one skill to another inside the same reasoning process.

The direction matters.

Switching from mathematical derivation to creative writing may have a different difficulty from switching from creative writing to mathematical derivation. The model enters the second step with a reasoning state, answer modality, and behavioral prior shaped by the first step.

We estimate Skill Entropy by comparing how well a reference model handles skills in isolation with how well it handles them when they are chained together.

If both skills are easy individually, but performance drops substantially when the model moves from one to the other, the transition has 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘆.

For a long-horizon task, we aggregate the entropy of its consecutive skill transitions into a task-level score.

This provides a difficulty axis that task length alone cannot capture. Two tasks may contain the same number of steps and similarly difficult individual questions, while differing substantially in the difficulty of the transitions between them.

Skill Entropy therefore measures not simply:

“How difficult are these skills?”

but:

“𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺?”
