And yes, for anyone saying that UTME doesn’t determine teaching ability, I hear you!
But one thing you must know is that policies communicate value.
As for this policy, it just goes a long way to show the value we place on the teaching profession
Nigeria just removed UTME for students applying to study Education.
You don’t need to do JAMB again. Just your 4 O’Level credits is all that’s needed and then you’re in.
However, I cannot stop thinking about what this is really saying. 🧵
Yes, Nigeria has a teacher shortage.
The whole world does.
UNESCO says we need 44 million more teachers globally by 2030.
Nowhere in any @UNESCO recommendation does it say:
Lower the entry requirements and fill the gap.
Nowhere did they ever state that.
Every profession Nigeria takes seriously has rigorous entry requirements.
But the people holding classrooms together despite everything?
We keep lowering bar around them instead of supporting them and actually improving their working conditions.
Everyone already knows how the teaching profession is easily the least respected and lowest paid profession in the country
But the best thing to do is remove the standardized barrier around it
Do we even still see teaching as a profession?
Medicine no work.
Law no work.
Nursing no work.
Engineering no work.
“Just go to Education.”
That narrative has existed for years in Nigerian homes.
And now the system itself seems to be confirming it.
WHY ARE CAMP MEETINGS IMPORTANT?
The term “Camp meeting” as we know it today originated in the 1700’s during the Great Awakening revivals in England and America.
It was a period where the spiritual life of many was thin, so traveling preachers organized multi-day outdoor gatherings for worship, preaching, prayer, and conversion. This eventually resulted in the explosion of revival across many cities.
However, the culture of mapping out time for prolonged devotion to God goes as far back as the Bible days. In Acts 2, the disciples spent days waiting on God until the Holy Ghost fell.
Also, we see in Acts 13, certain Teachers and Prophets who ministered to the Lord and fasted, and while they did this, the Holy Ghost gave an instruction for Paul and Barnabas to be ministry partners in the work that God has called them for.
However, following this instruction, they kept praying. This goes to show that they weren’t fasting and praying just to receive an instruction, but for fellowship.
Creating time to spend a protracted period of time in devotion is a biblical practice that mustn’t be lost in our day.
This is why we hold the REBOOT CAMP!

And I’ll keep saying this:
We can’t claim progress in education until every child can learn and live safely.
She just wanted an education.
That was all 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje asked for.
But instead of safety, she found years of abuse in the home of those meant to sponsor her schooling.
This isn’t just her story but a mirror of what too many girls face.
