Jesus Christ said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

He did NOT say, “If ye love me, support my preferred federal spending legislation.”

In Matthew 6:1, Jesus warned against performing acts of righteousness to be seen by men. In Matthew 23:23, He rebuked religious leaders who emphasized outward observances while neglecting judgment, mercy, and faith.

And in John 7:24, Christ commanded us to judge righteous judgment, not appearances.

So let’s examine your argument.

You claim Republicans voted to cut a trillion dollars from Medicaid. Does that figure represent reductions in projected future expenditures, actual reductions in current benefits, or a combination of policy changes over several years?

How much comes from eligibility requirements? How much from federal financing changes? How much from eliminating improper payments?

Those distinctions matter, Reverend!

You cannot establish the moral character of a legislator merely by citing a budget number without explaining the legislation.

And since you have invoked the authority of Jesus Christ, let’s examine the broader theological question.

Christian charity is a commandment. Government spending is a matter of public policy. They are not synonymous.

Christ commanded individuals to care for the poor, the sick, the widow, and the stranger. He did not establish a particular federal Medicaid appropriation as the test of Christian fidelity.

That is an extraordinary conflation coming from a minister who should understand the difference between biblical exegesis and political advocacy.

You said there should be a connection between what we say on Sunday and what we do on Monday.

I AGREE!

That standard applies to you, too.

If you want to debate Medicaid, bring the legislation, the fiscal projections, the enrollment figures, and the measurable consequences.

But don’t stand behind a pulpit, invoke Jesus Christ, and insinuate that Christians who disagree with your political prescriptions have betrayed their faith.

Jesus Christ is The Lord, Senator. He is not the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

And His commandments are not campaign literature.
