Since Trump’s victory there’s been near daily attacks in the UK media aimed at the government’s energy and net zero policies (there have been three in the last 24 hours). And yet there’s been barely a peep in defence from the government or its outriders.
The right are trying to stop discussion of climate change and the LA fires even though scientists warned this would happen.
One - @ClimateHuman - moved from LA precisely because climate change was making catastrophic wildfires far more likely.
Does this look normal to you?
Earlier this year we said goodbye to gas at our home in York 👋
The meter was removed by @OctopusEnergy and we're now officially off the gas grid!
This will save us ~£100 a year in standing charges, but more importantly, we’re no longer burning any fossil fuel in our home 🙂
Here’s a short story about who wins and loses from the status quo of our inheritance tax rules - and about, what you might politely call ‘sub-optimal’ journalism🧵
The scences from Valencia were awful last week, horrific.
It happens to be the home of @octopusenergy in Spain (@OctopusEnergyES).
This is the street where our main warehouse/depot is - and I'm going to share some of the messages from our team there. It's soberingly awful

Batteries are now playing a huge role in some energy systems around the world.
Look at California - not long ago you wouldn’t even be able to see the contribution from batteries. Few expected batteries to ever be able to compete.
Today instead of fossil fuel generation batteries discharge stored renewable electricity.
Be prepared for much more to come.
Britain's electricity mix over the last 24 hours:
Nuclear 12.8% Gas 26.4% Coal 0.0%
Wind 37.1% Solar 4.0% Hydro 1.2%
Biomass 9.4% Import 8.6% Storage 0.5%
Generation 726.5GWh
Carbon intensity 168 gCO2e/kWh
vs a target of 50-100 gCO2eq/kWh by 2030
@edwinhayward In Scotland, it is already a legal requirement for new houses to have energy efficient measures (plans post 2015) ~80% opt for solar panels.
Like our @TaylorWimpey home in Ayrshire. Good legislation is required to ensure builders do it right, may not be perfect but it's a start
Solar panels and farms go together superbly.
Politicians shouldn’t be telling farmers and landowners what they can do with their own land. Farmers know best.
Well, it's official. If @RobertJenrick wins the @Conservatives leadership contest I will be politically homeless. There is a good discussion to be had about HOW to get to Net Zero; but pretending we don't have to, and blaming Net Zero for all our economic woes, is just infantile.
Florida braces for Hurricane Milton
Safety is paramount.
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a widely recognized scale that categorizes hurricanes into five categories.
#Florida#HurricaneMilton
1. Category 1: Hurricanes with sustained winds of 74-95 mph
2. Category 2: Hurricanes with sustained winds of 96-110 mph
3. Category 3: Hurricanes with sustained winds of 111-129 mph
4. Category 4: Hurricanes with sustained winds of 130-156 mph
5. Category 5: Hurricanes with sustained winds of 157 mph or higher
Damage example
Today is the day the UK becomes the first G7 country to completely phase out coal power
Since opening "Jumbo", the world's first coal power plant in 1882, the UK's coal plants have burned through a whopping 4.6bn tonnes of coal, emitting 10.4GtCO2 – which is more than most countries have ever released
Here's the story of how that all came to an end:
