As someone who works closely within this environment, I think it’s important to correct the narrative.

The “SABC gets R234 million bailout” narrative is misleading.

This is not a bailout and it is not new funding.

It is part of the existing allocation historically provided for specific public mandate obligations, including Channel Africa and children’s educational content.

The funding is ring-fenced, limited, and nowhere near sufficient to sustainably fund the public mandate.

No new allocation to the SABC was announced.

Accuracy and context matter in reporting issues of public broadcasting.

Another part of the public broadcasting ecosystem people often overlook is sport.

Major sporting events don’t automatically appear on television.
Broadcast rights must be purchased, and globally those rights have become extremely expensive.
