Haíɫzaqv stewardship practices reflect these important ecological relationships and promote recovery and sustained use;
BUT resilience of this fishery is susceptible to the erosion of customary practice and warming seawater temperatures

Both Indigenous knowledge and western scientific methods pointed to the importance of larger kelp size and cooler ocean temperatures in driving recovery post harvest

To our surprise, we found no effect of the traditional method of partial harvest, and that harvest actually mimicked natural loss - but that stated harvest levels were 2x the rate used to inform our experiment

We asked; 1 how much does kelp recover following traditional harvest; 2 how do ocean conditions affect recovery; 3 what stewardship practices are used today.
We used an ecological experiment and Indigenous knowledge interviews to reveal the answers.
