🚨 Darwin Nunez on his conversation with Cristiano Ronaldo:
“Everybody is asking why I covered my mouth when I was speaking to Cristiano.
I did it because I know how football works now. You say three words to somebody, a camera catches it, and by morning people have decided what the conversation was about.
The funny thing is, covering my mouth has made everybody even more curious.
Cristiano was smiling. We were talking about the game, and I told him, ‘You know, there’s something I find strange about you.’
He said, ‘What?’
‘You’re getting close to a thousand goals, and people are still looking for reasons not to be impressed.’
He laughed.
‘Darwin, you think I don’t know?’
I said, ‘No, but I really don’t understand it.’
I’ve been a striker all my life. Believe me, I know how difficult one goal can be. Sometimes you do everything right and the ball hits the post. Sometimes you score and somebody tells you the goalkeeper should have saved it.
Now imagine doing that nearly a thousand times, and people are still arguing about whether you deserve the goals.
I told him, ‘If there was a way to say you scored them illegally, somebody would have found it by now.’
He laughed again.
But I meant it.
People can prefer Messi. I have enormous respect for Messi. He’s one of the greatest players football has ever seen.
What I don’t understand is why some people seem unable to enjoy Messi without finding a reason to be angry at Cristiano.
You can believe Messi is the greatest footballer. That’s your opinion.
But why should Cristiano having more career goals make you angry?
It doesn’t take anything away from Messi.
That’s what I find strange. Sometimes I think people spend so much time trying to reduce Cristiano’s achievements that they forget to appreciate their own favourite player.
And I told Cristiano something else.
‘Your country should be proud of this. Football should be proud of this. We’re talking about the greatest goalscorer the game has seen. People can argue about who plays better football, but they cannot argue those goals out of existence.’
He looked at me and said, ‘I haven’t scored a thousand yet.’
I said, ‘That’s exactly the problem with you. I’m trying to give you a compliment and you’re correcting the statistics.’
He smiled.
People will look at the goal and say it was a tap-in. Fine. But I play as a striker. I know how many times you can make that same movement and the ball never arrives.
Cristiano has made a career out of being where the ball is going to be before everybody else realises it.
That’s not luck you can repeat 980 times.
But something else happened that I found interesting.
Coman was running towards goal with Cristiano beside him. Two attackers against one defender. He could have passed to Cristiano, but he decided to finish it himself.
And Cristiano celebrated with him.
I smiled because I could already imagine what people would have said if Cristiano had complained.
‘He’s selfish. He only cares about his goals.’
But he celebrated, and I doubt those same people will spend much time talking about that.
That’s the strange thing about Cristiano. Sometimes people have already decided what kind of person he is, and they’re only waiting for something that confirms it.
I remember telling him earlier, ‘You know, when you reach a thousand, somebody will probably ask why you didn’t score them sooner.’
He laughed.
But I wasn’t entirely joking.
He’s 20 goals away from something nobody has ever achieved at this level. I think people should enjoy watching that happen, even if he isn’t their favourite player.
Because one day Cristiano will stop scoring, and everybody will suddenly remember how extraordinary it was.
Before we separated, I asked him, ‘Cristiano, when you reach a thousand, will you finally be satisfied?’
He looked at me like I’d asked him to retire.
I think that was my answer.”
