Here we see a prototype of the @ALICEexperiment’s Inner Tracking System 3 (ITS 3).

The new detector enhances the measurements of thermal radiation emitted by the quark-gluon plasma – a state of matter that existed shortly after the #BigBang – and provides insights into the interactions of charm and beauty quarks when they propagate through the plasma.

With 10m2 of active silicon area and nearly 13 billion pixels, the current ITS installed for the ongoing #LHC run is the largest pixel detector ever built. The new ITS3 will be placed closer to the interaction point – 2mm from the beam pipe – and will be more economic.
