Today marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM). 🏳️‍🌈🚩

LGSM was an alliance of lesbians and gay men who supported the Miners' Strike from 1984-1985, standing in solidarity with their class against the Thatcher Government, which had declared war on the workers and their trade union movement. One of the founders, Mark Ashton, would also become the YCL General Secretary in 1985 before his tragic passing in 1987. 

In December 1984, LGSM famously organised the gig "Pits and Perverts" to raise money for the striking miners. With this, alongside other methods, the group raised over £20,000 for the miners, equivalent to £70,000 in 2020.

Bringing together the struggle for LGBT+ rights and class analysis was crucial to the success of LGSM. Their work convinced the gay community that the struggle for their rights should not exist outside the wider labour movement and, as a result, they managed to defeat the bigotry and social conservatism present at the time in the labour movement. Because of their work, unions and miners groups became some of the most vocal allies for the LGBT+ movement.

LGSM continues to be an inspiration to what can be achieved when we unify as a class. A unified class struggle is the only way to advance the rights of all under the boot of capitalism.
