@emm0sh This structure of production makes the high investment cost viable. Switching it to low volume production with a high value product would be very challenging and is more of a business and marketing problem than an engineering one.

@emm0sh Value is reverse imputed up the supply chain from the consumer at the end of the production process. Commodities don't go through to many hands before they're put to use because as you go further up the supply chain you get a smaller share of said value.
