He was just 27.
But he refused to stay silent.
His name was Manjunath Shanmugam.
An IIM Lucknow graduate who joined Indian Oil Corporation as a sales officer.
His posting was in Uttar Pradesh.
While inspecting petrol pumps, he discovered something serious.
Many dealers were adulterating fuel - mixing cheaper substances in petrol and diesel and cheating customers.
Most people would ignore it.
But Manjunath didn’t.
He reported the corruption.
He sealed several petrol pumps involved in the scam.
That decision cost him his life.
On 19 November 2005, a petrol pump owner shot him dead outside his office.
He was only 27 years old.
Later, the killers were arrested, convicted, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
But justice came slowly for his family.
His parents did not receive compensation for 15 years.
Today, his college runs the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust to support the fight against corruption.
Some people don’t die because they are weak.
They die because they refused to look the other way.
And sadly, India forgets such people too quickly.
I will not get into the regulatory/lead-acid battery angle. Speaking purely as an engineer, here is how I see it.
To save costs, most E-rickshaws are built with a handlebar steering system on a single front wheel. This allows them a near-zero turning radius. They can perform a U-turn in a space smaller than a hatchback.
Cos they can turn anywhere, they do turn anywhere. This unpredictable lateral movement breaks the lane-discipline of every other vehicle on the road, forcing everyone behind them to brake, 1 of the primary cause of phantom traffic jams.
Hyderabad is a city where you can travel from one era to another without a time machine.

Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills mix of 90s, 2000s eras.
Malkajgiri, LB Nagar, Uppal areas still in 2000s.
Hussain Sagar, Tank Bund, Necklace Road is very much 2000s.
Wanna experience 90s and early 2000s try Secunderabad, Begumpet, Ameerpet, Punjagutta.
Want to see how life was like in the 80s try Narayana Guda, Chikadpally, Musheerabad, RTC X Roads region.
Abids, Koti, Nampally are still in the 70s, 80s.
And then you have the Old City that is somewhere in the 40s or 50s, timeless.

The Jizya tax, a punitive levy imposed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb on Hindus for practicing their faith, stands as a stark symbol of oppression, yet historians have long softened its brutality. #HariHaraVeeraMallu boldly unmasks this injustice, exposing the erasure of Hindu suffering and the looting of India’s wealth, like the Kohinoor’s theft. With unwavering resolve, this saga celebrates Sanatana Dharma and the courage of our unsung heroes who defied tyranny.
