Story Lessons are here! A new way to engage spellers; they're just like traditional lessons with the same types of questions except they are based on a narrative rather than an educational article.
Just type in what you want the story to be about and AI does the rest.
@comm4allorg Your academy is wonderful resource. It helped me get started with my son and informed much of the design of the spelling app I built for him.
@and_kell Imagine if ABA embraced spelling... 40 hrs / week! But it's all too entrenched and fossilized now with insurance, beuacracy, investors, and red tape.
I prefer the agility of the spellers movement, where we are solving problems rather than protecting interests.
@and_kell I've read a handful of books about spellers and this one really stands out to me for how vividly it describes the enormous suffering the family endured before spelling, contrasted by the many gifts Houston reveals when he gains communication.
@KTAsher5 As if this weren't already a powerful enough book in print, to have this narrated by Houston's own sister who shared much of his suffering must bring this to a emotional cresendo!
Houston's such a powerful soul, wow! That fire! Anyone who's read Katie's book knows exactly what he's been through to get here. And you can just feel those emotions in this response.
Echoing "find out what they like:" my minimally-speaking son gets VERY chatty when we're playing a board game he likes -- working hard on speech, and enthusiastically.
He's also far more into the spelling lessons when they're on topics he's into.
Thanks for the video!
This shows what the developing stages of spelling can often look like. It takes lots of patience to coach an apraxic body while balancing regulation. But it gets easier, and then very rewarding!
@kelduck Nice, looks like he's moving to the 26 with gesturals?
My speller has a sha-shi-bo as well. He's also enjoyed stickers-by-number during spelling.
After lunch a few weeks ago, he gestured wordlessly at the fridge. Dad's pretty good at guessing his wants after 8 years and was sure he knew the answer, but wife suggested the spelling board.
And so for the first time ever he spelled something he wanted:
SWEET POTATO!
This is Indigo, the true inspiration of SpellerShip. He's minimally-speaking and has been practicing spelling for about 18 months now.
Each lesson is on a topic of his choice, along with questions about what he learns. He answers by tapping letters on physical boards.
