But to understand what's happening, we need to understand the history.

THE LAW OF THE LAND & MARITIME LAW

For centuries, domestic law has governed people, property and civil rights, while maritime law has governed shipping, navigation and trade across the seas.

In 1787, the US Constitution expressly recognised Admiralty and maritime jurisdiction. These legal systems have existed alongside one another ever since.
