“Children need to see math as a conceptual, growth subject that they should think about & make sense of. When Ss see math as a series of short Qs…They think that math is a fixed set of methods that either they get or they don’t” #growthmindset#mathmindset@joboaler#leadersread
Remember when we thought COVID would cause us to re-think teaching and learning? Instead it seems we've regressed to spending more energy teaching basic facts & skills. Let's not give up -- the world depends on updating our focus to conceptual learning that transfers. 💪
Had the privilege to be a part of the 4/5 class to observe a #number talk and teach a #mathgame. Enjoyed hearing so much #French and mathematically language and thinking. @bishopsavaryn_ecsd #ecsdfaithinspires https://t.co/TLLXioNEMm
@ProjectZeroHGSE Refreshing to be reminded that as an educator, you control the culture in your classroom. What kind of culture are you developing?
Work oriented vs learning oriented
Get it done vs reflection
1 way vs flexibility

Practice what you preach. Using guiding questions, learner intentions and success criteria to guide my session with teachers. New role but same pedagogy. Thanks to my mentor @nicole_manko who has helped me in my professional development.

Happy World Teacher Day to all teachers. Your dedication and love for all the children makes such a difference. May God continue to guide you and give you strength.
Grade 1 kids explored odd/even numbers this week inspired by @numberblocks We made 1-10 and figured out how to tell if odd/even just by looking. #MtHolyokeMath
What's a helpful thing I could do for teachers right now? Normally do PD, but that feels disconnected & insensitive to current challenges. Offer a guest class & give folk a break? Design a lesson + video on a tricky topic--assuming having my unusual approach to math okay? Other?
Peer assessment using colored dots. Ss followed the success criteria to review peer work and added the corresponding dots as they found evidence. Followed by 2 stars and a wish. Thanks @VinceBusta for this great idea during #assessmentplaybook book study #ecsdfaithinspires
Learning isn't just about about reading textbooks. It's about finding something you care about, having the skills to teach yourself, and stumbling forward until you achieve your goal, solve the problem, or change the world.
