@sugataraju The author and this book specifically deserves a much wider audience regardless of political leanings. Sugata is the closest to a Robert Caro in India. I wish at some point he takes up Modi as a subject.

Brilliant prose - the reader gets into the marrow of Deve Gowda’s governance philosophy. I don’t have to agree with either the author or his subjects’ political leanings (and don’t in entirety)

Today, the subject of my biographical work, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, enters his 94th year. He does not look tired, and certainly not in a mood to retire. He has been a lawmaker for 65 years, and in public life for nearly 70 years. That is a record hard to beat for anybody in the near future. I wish him a very happy birthday.

The life of Mr. HD Deve Gowda in the book is placed amidst the larger landscape of Karnataka politics and its socio-cultural history, contemporary national politics, federal politics, anti-Congress politics, Janata parivar politics, farm and irrigation policies, the Prime Minister’s Office, the skullduggery of realpolitik, dynastic successions, and in general, the trajectories of Indian democracy. Therefore, I assure you, you’ll get much more than Mr. Gowda’s life if you read the book.

Gowda rose from being a grassroots politician (a Taluk Board member before he became an independent legislator in 1962) to being the Prime Minister of our nation without pelf, pedigree or patronage. His ability to rise to the highest executive position of our land is nothing but a celebration of India’s democratic credentials.
