Major financial events in 2025
- Rates started coming down again — the Fed ended the year with cuts, taking the target range to 3.5%–3.75%.
- Japan “normalized” money — the Bank of Japan hiked to 0.75%, the highest level in ~30 years.
- Precious metals went vertical — gold +~65% (best year since 1979) and silver +~145% (record run).
- The dollar had a rough year — down ~9.5% (its steepest annual drop since 2017); euro and sterling were big beneficiaries.
- Stablecoins got a real U.S. rulebook — the GENIUS Act was signed into law on July 18, 2025.
- Debt hit a new record — global debt climbed to ~$346T (about 310% of global GDP).
